Mechanostat
Prestressed Fabric and Composite FormFinding
Team: Ali Askarinejad, RizKalla Chaaraov
Mechanostat is an investigation of pretensioned fiber reinforced composites and their 3D form-finding. The research focuses on the material properties of knitted textiles simultaneously acting as the forcing element as well as reinforcement for the stiff resin composite. The possibilities of ‘post-forming’ without the need for formwork or molds were achieved through prestressing the fabrics in flat condition, applying resin and releasing the force after the curing process of the composite. This process was elaborated through the introduction of different multifunctional PETG layers used for masking, post-cutting bed and maintaining the flat condition. In the last stage of this installation shape memory alloy springs were incorporated to activate the global form.
